The Snow Man

by Wallace Stevens

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

  4. I'm going to copy and paste this poem and send it to all my family and friends in Pittsburgh! They got over a foot of snow over the weekend and they are now getting at least six more inches. They will appreciate a positive outlook on the snow. My best friend sent me a picture and the children all said, "Thats not fair. We want snow!" Hopefully, they will get their wish tomorrow! Pawtucket already canceled school. Maybe RIC will cancel too and we can all stay in our pajamas, drink hot chocolate, and blog our favorite snow poems!!

  5. Nicole--you are killing me. I think the listener is God, not the snow. Let's be sure to argue about this when we see each other on Monday. It's 11:45 and it is FINALLY starting to snow in Providence. Tracy--get those kids ready to rumble because it's really starting to come down! Hope you're all in your sweats watching Golden Girls reruns. ENJOY! Glad you liked the poem so much...
